The Maui Butterfly Farm Tour!

Overview
We have moved to a new location! We are now located at 820 Olowalu Village Rd, next to the Olowalu General Store on the way to Lahaina!

We are the oldest butterfly farm in Hawaii and the only one that offers private tours of a butterfly farm in the State. We are a certified Monarch Waystation and strive to save the butterflies through propagation, research and education. We’re the only place in the Islands to see live Hawaiian butterflies in our walk in butterfly flight house. Unlike Mainland butterfly farms, all of our butterflies are home bred and hand raised on our organic farm. We do not purchase or ship in our butterflies from abroad, therefore all of our butterflies are endemic to Hawaii.

I was disappointed. I understood it to be a high-quality operation especially given the Trip Advisor ticketing connection. It's genuine with useful information but more like a private back yard operation. Makeshift facilities and enclosures housing only 3-4 butterfly types yet the prices charged are consistent with significant investment in facilities, which don't exist. TA needs to look harder at this.

Oh dear. It seems this guest misunderstood our aims here at our family run butterfly farm. As we clearly explain to guests, Hawaii is a quarantined state and only has 16 types of butterflies and so we concentrate on those that are best suited to the hot, dry Olowalu environment. For those guests that arrive on time, they will also learn as to why we concentrate on the now endangered Monarch butterfly, how we breed thousands of them each year and ways in which guests can go back to their home state using the seeds that we give them to help the endangered monarch population. As far as comparing prices we think this guest will be able to see that the Octopus farm on the Big Island is $60 p/person, the Seahorse Farm $72 and the Pineapple Tours $65, which makes us approximately half of their prices. Again, this is for a tour which is all hands on and interactive. We suggest all guests that come to the farm read all of our five star reviews before coming and will see why we are the only butterfly farm in the entire state of Hawaii. For those guests that are not interested in the conservation or wildlife here in Hawaii, or ways in which they can help the butterfly population or why they are so important as pollinators, they may be more interested in other activities. We also always encourage guests to arrive on time to get the most out of our fun interactive tour.

A very informative and interesting tour! We decided to do the tour last minute just to bypass some time but it did not disappoint! The staff are lovely and super helpful! You are able to hold different types of butterflies while also learning about the growing process. Definitely check it out!

This was one of my favorite things I did in Maui. Absolutely fantastic. The staff was so knowledgeable and those little caterpillars and butterflies miraculous. So interesting to hear about their life cycle. Great photo opportunities as they give you a hibiscus flower to hold that attracts the butterflies. And the praying mantis were incredible. They sat on my hand too!
