This is the only canopy tour that I know of which is actually owned by the guides. In a place like Costa Rica, it's always hard to tell where your money is going . . . a lot of times companies are owned by foreigners (or ex-pats) and even though all of the work is being done by locals, most of the benefits go elsewhere. Not the case with Original Canopy Tours. Also, the guides themselves are so so so great. We had Jose and Johnny, both of whom were fantastic. Jose was learning to give the tours in English so he practiced with us a couple of times, but Johnny was fluent and so was our primary guide. The guides took pictures for us with our camera and Jose even took a video of the longest zip line (half a mile!) for us so we could have both hands free for the rope. We also did a tarzan swing (basically jumping off a ledge while attached to a harness . . . quite a rush), climbed through the inside of a hollow Strangler Ficus tree, repelled down another huge tree, and saw a bunch of cool birds. Jose and Johnny made sure we had helmets on the whole time and the trip was very safe, and I would recommend for any age.

I read all the reviews of the different canopy tours offered in Monteverde -- and there are a ton of them! I am so glad we decided to go with the Original Canopy Tour. They were so professional and Gary, our family's guide, made sure to point out monkeys and toucans and quetzals as we stood atop the platforms. This tour has a little bit of an Indiana Jones feeling as you rappel down a 100 foot ficus tree, then climb back up to the top. The ziplines are varied and take you through primary and secondary cloud forest. The view of the Gulf of Nicoya is absolutely breathtaking. I would 100% recommend the Original Canopy Tour -- and would love to do it again with my family.

We zipped at Original Canopy in Monteverde and at SkyTrek in Arenal. Both were fun, but they were two very different experiences. After doing both, my family (2 teen boys and 2 parents) all preferred Original Canopy. We liked the more personal experience at OCT. We were the only ones in our time slot, so our family of 4 got a private tour. We liked the experience of zipping through the canopy. Each zip line seemed different, and the tarzan swing and hollow tree hike really added a lot. Be aware that you do some hiking at Original Canopy. Not anything very long (longest was a little over 10 minutes) but some of the trails are steep. For us, the hiking added to our appreciation of the beautiful location. At Sky Trek in Arenal, we felt it was more like a thrill ride at a theme park. Wait your turn, zip, wait again. Still very fun, but a very different experience.
