The Turquoise Museum Curator's Tour

Overview
The Turquoise Museum in Albuquerque, New Mexico showcases the J.C. “Zack” Zachary turquoise collection. The collection includes turquoise from over 80 locations around the world, several one of a kind pieces including the “George Washington Stone” (a large turquoise stone with a remarkable resemblance to George Washington), and displays show that off almost every aspect of “The World’s Most Colorful Gem”. Energetic, entertaining, and informative tours are guided by a member of the Lowry/Zachary Family. Visitors often remark, “we should have come here before we went shopping”.

This was a very informative and enchanting experience at a unique attraction. The collection is a private one, accumulated and curated by 5 generations of a family that has been intimately involved in the exploration for, cutting and collecting of exquisite samples and information about turquoises and turquoise mining from all over the world. The displays are beautiful and signage is on point and informative. I had the pleasure of meeting the curator and, as the author of several books on and around the topic, he answered a few questions that i had and added many details that one would never think existed. The tour period is 2 hours so I had plenty of time to stroll through the 2 story palace which houses the collection. There is parking nearby and a coffee shop across the road. It's a rare treat to find this attraction and i highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Albuquerque area.

During the 4 days I was actually staying in Albuquerque, I couldn't get a ticket so I purchased my ticket for a day during the Santa Fe leg of my trip and prayed the weather would hold out (it snowed the day before) and drove the r/t 2 hours and it was absolutely worth it!!! I ended up with a private tour with Joe, the curator/owner, a hot cup of Turquoise Joe in my hand and an unforgettable 3 hour conversation. This was by far the most fascinating time I spent in Albuquerque, and likely one of the best, if not the best, museum tours I've had in all my worldly travels. The castle itself is intriguing, the Turquoise collection is staggering and Joe himself is a one-of-a-kind which combined, made for a worthwhile, memorable and enjoyable experience. Highly recommend!!!
