This was our first visit to Hawaii. We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. The Hilton offers a luau but we felt it might be too commercialized and felt it was awfully pricey. We started looking and comparing on Trip Advisor and are really glad we did. The Toa Luau was well worth every penny. We got more in our gold package with Toa than what Hilton was offering on their top tier and paid less for it. It is located in the North Shore. The cost includes admission to the Waimea Valley and waterfall. We were able to make a full day of things. We started with a walk to the waterfall and a swim. Then had lunch and decided to head across the street to Sunset Beach until it was time for the luau. Everything is in a decent walking distance. The luau dinner was excellent and plentiful. They offered seconds for anyone still hungry. Prior to the luau they talked about the culture and walked through how they traditionally prepare the meal. They also do a welcome ceremony and a great job of explaining everything. After the meal the cultural presentation is great. They do a wonderful job of showing the traditional dances of all walks of the Polynesian culture. They finish the show with skilled fire dancers. It shows in all they do the pride they take in sharing their culture with everyone. From the emcee, who keeps the programs moving and fun, to the excellent food and skilled dancers it’s well worth the price (which is still less then the resort ones and a lot more to do and see.)

Overall it was a very nice experience with outstanding performances and unique elements. However, I would not go with a baby. First, the beginning of the show was a "cooking demonstration" that involved prolonged standing (tough while holding a baby). Second, there was extremely loud high pitched drumming that likely measures dangerous on any decibel meter-certainly not safe for a baby. On another note, the humour, special celebrations, and ending of luau are very similar to what we saw at Chief's luau and made the luau feel a bit like an imitation. Nonetheless, I cannot give less than 4 stars because of some unique elements and fire knife dancing that tops Chief's Luau's and the pride and effort that exudes from everyone behind the luau. I expect it will be better with time once it develops its own identity more.

My family of four with an 18 and 13 year old visited the Waimea valley and falls prior to the luau. That was a great experience and a fun hike. The kids enjoyed swimming in the falls. We also went to the luau based on the recommendations here. We were not disappointed!! This luau is smaller (less than 200 people) and you are really able to experience the various activities and be up close to the show no matter what package you buy. We were gold. The food was good and you really were made to feel like Ohana. We highly recommend!!
