Treme Music/Black History Tour New Orleans

Overview
We are the only tour guides in New Orleans who are initiated High Priestesses of Louisiana Plantation Vodou. We have a unique perspective that goes deeper than what can be found in books (though we’re thorough researchers as well), and we look forward to sharing the rich and blended cultures that make up New Orleans.

What To Expect
1
New Orleans Jazz National Historic Park
Learn the back stories of musical legends such as Moses Hogan, Mahalia Jackson, Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden and more.
2
Congo Square
Visit the actual site where Jazz was born through West African drum circles held every Sunday since 1724. Stand in one of the few places in the US where enslaved people were allowed to mass congregate; where they got married, held church, and traded wares.
3
St. Augustine Church
Pay your respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Slave on the ground of St. Augustine’s Church in Treme, the oldest Black neighborhood in the nation.
4
Louis Armstrong Park
Take in the history that is the foundation of New Orleans music, cuisine, architecture and culture; it can be surprisingly hard to find, and we’re glad you’ve made it to us!

Malika did a phenomenal job of enlightening us on the history of NOL black history. She was a great story teller and encouraged our insights and input. Malika provided a great overview of the spirituality, music and history of NOL particularly the Treme neighborhood.

We have done several Viator tours. All have been exceptional. This one was the best of all. Melike (spelling?) was incredibly engaging and knowledgeable. Our family (2 parents and 2 tweens/teens) learned so much about this unique and important neighborhood and how the past has shaped its current form today. Weaving her unmatched knowledge of ethnomusicology, history, New Orleans culture, and her passion for Treme, Melike creates a fun, honest, educational, well-rounded, and accessible experience for all ages.
