Dana Point's Festival of Whales looked interesting and so I decided to check it out. My daughter used to live near the harbor and I loved spending time walking, ocean gazing and hanging out at the fun restaurants overlooking the water. The Festival of Whales looked like the perfect excuse to drive south and visit a wonderful place, so I did. When I arrived on Saturday it hadn't occurred to me to actually get on a boat and spend two hours on the ocean. But when I encountered so many happy people getting off of the Dana Pride, I realized I had no choice, it was time to go to sea. I made my reservation for the next day and booked the sunset trip. It was a perfect choice. Being the last trip of the day, it was slightly less crowded and more leisurely than earlier trips. It also turned out to be among the most successful outings of the day with our encountering a pod of gray whales. We didn't get to see the eleven sighted on the morning trip, but there were many whales of all sizes and they were what the announcer liked to call "good whales" in that they ignored us and joyfully went about their lives of feeding and swimming and waving their magnificent flukes (tails). Although I went alone I found myself sitting next to a group of friendly people and we were all yelling and clapping and having a wonderful time. The day was slightly overcast and the water very calm, and overall my two hours on that boat was utterly wonderful. I will be going back soon and taking my grandchildren who love sea creatures above all things. I highly recommend this trip and have only one criticism, the commentary was way too loud and hurt my ears. Oh well, a small price to pay for such a great time.

Great afternoon whale and dolphin watching. The crew was great, very friendly. Saw lots of whales and the dolphins were all around the boat. Well worth the time!

Great way to spend 2 hours. The boat was not really crowded so it was easy to move around and follow the fish. We saw 4 gray whales, several dozen dolphins & a couple of sea lions.
