The Whitney Plantation offers you an opportunity to experience the story of plantation life in Louisiana from the perspective of those enslaved. It does a good job of not glorifying the ownership. The 45 min drive home gives you a quick chance to nap prior to hitting the town.

We did the kayak swamp and plantation tour yesterday! What a wonderful tour! Our kayak swamp tour was lead by Ross. He is very knowledgeable about the ecosystem of the swamp, and an excellent steward of the environment! The plantation tour was equally impressive! I don’t remember our guide’s name, but he was a Ph.D candidate in history. The presentation of the tour was from the perspective of the slaves and the slave trade. Very emotional and moving experience. Would do this tour again in a heartbeat! Highly recommend it!

In short, this was definitely the best thing we did in New Orleans! The Whitney plantation gave us a glimpse into the sad history of slavery in the US and allowed us to understand the suffering the African Americans have endured. The kayak tour was an amazing experience, with a close up encounter with alligators, turtles, birds etc. Our guide Josh was absolutely amazing with his knowledge and experience. My wife and i highly recommend this to everyone visiting New Orleans!! You gotta get out of the CBD to have a genuine experience!!
