Overview

This tour is a great way to experience some amazing sights of Alaska, wildlife, glaciers, and a rainforest within a half day. Your guide will pick you up from downtown Anchorage and drive along Turnagain Arm, which boasts abundant scenic views and Alaskan wildlife within easy access to the city of Anchorage. Along the way, you will learn many interesting facts about this area’s history, animals, and ecosystem from your experienced guide.
You will visit the Wildlife Conservation Center, located at the end of Turnagain Arm and surrounded by mountain peaks. You will have the chance to explore on your own and visit the many animals in the center, including brown bears, wolfs, caribou, moose, and the endangered Woodland Bison.
After the Wildlife Center, you will have the opportunity to see the majestic Portage Valley, a few miles drive from the Wildlife Center. Here you will enjoy several amazing viewpoints of glaciers, lakes, rivers, and a unique rainforest.

What To Expect

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

View Alaska's most famous animals up close in a natural setting. During this visit, you'll get great pictures of real live bears, moose, musk-ox, caribou, bison, and more! The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) is a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, research, education and quality animal care. AWCC has provided care for hundreds of displaced animals because visitors like you have made critical contributions in the form of admission fees, donations, memberships, and gift shop purchases.

Chugach State Park

Beluga Point: Popular photo stop with panoramic views of Turnagain Arm, with possible opportunities to see Dall sheep and Beluga whales. Timing is everything hopefully you will see both!

Portage Glacier

Portage Valley: You will see Explorer Glacier, Middle Glacier, Byron Glacier and Take a Walk through a Rainforest. Next grab a snack or meal to enjoy on your ride back to Anchorage at Portage Day Lodge.

Bought tour on line paid full price. Got to tour, selling for 60 dollars cash. Driver brand new. Had no clue what the tour was. Had to look up online via my phone to confirm route. Driver dressed like a bum. No name tag or uniform. No speaker system inside van. Driver mumbled and I was in second row and barely heard anything. Driver (Steve) not well versed in what we were seeing. Had same data that you got from the tour brochures that were in the visitors center rack. Instead of offering information we were treated to listening to ESPN radio talking about baseball and a Seattle mariner baseball game. sent video of my experience to owner. Texted owner and requested refund and of course, never received a reply. This service sucked real bad !

We had a great driver with lots of knowledge. Unfortunately, the seats are tiny and 4 average sized adults were jammed into the back row with no room for us and forget trying to get a seat belt on. Too hot in thete with 16 people. Then some decided to order full sit down meals at the coffee shop which shorted us on seeing the conservation center and no time for gift shop there which was the whole point of our ride! Take it from us, take the shuttle to the conservation center direct. You will see Turnagain Arm from that. And more room! And to boot, it was cold and rainy so we couldnt even see the rainforest and Still got shorted at the wildlife center thanks to inconsiderate people taking advantage of coffee stop. We do Not recommend this.
