What To Expect
1
Schooner Appledore II Windjammer Cruise
If you always wanted to sail your own wooden ship, this is your chance. The crew welcomes your participation - offer to help raise the sails and take a turn at the wheel. The Appledore II is a hard working, seaworthy schooner. She has sailed around the world, docking at many harbors along the way. Twice a year, she still sails the Eastern seaboard between her two home ports of Camden, Maine and Key West, Florida. Ask your crew about her history, some have made this bi-annual 2,000 mile sailing trip. Our day sail on the Appledore II schooner departs from Bayview Landing, taking you out of Camden Harbor. Camden is often called the “jewel of the Maine coast” which becomes clear as you sail past the impressive lighthouse, Curtis Island Light, dating from 1836 and into Penobscot Bay. Considered to be one of the top cruising bays in the world, Penobscot Bay will amaze you with its uninhabited islands, wildlife and views of Camden Hills and other coastal mountains dropping off into the sea. During your Camden boat tour, look along the shore for Mount Battie, historic inns, and elegant summer mansions of the rich and famous with their million dollar yachts. Watch lobstermen hauling in their traps. On a typical day, you may see porpoises playing in the water, ospreys and eagles hunting for fish and even the occasional whale. Watch for seals sunning themselves on rocks and cute guillernots, cousins to puffins, with their bright red feet, wobbling as they walk along the rocky shoreline. Quench your thirst with cocktails, beer, wine and soft drinks, all available for purchase during your sailing cruise. As Camden Harbor comes back into view, relax and feel the wind sweep through your hair as your memorable sailing ship cruise draws to a close.

This was our first time out on a windjammer. I helped hoist the sails which really added to the experience. There was something truly magical about raising the sails, turning off the engine, and letting the wind and water take over. Our busy, noisy life seemed a world away. Thanks to the captain and crew for a wonderful time!

We're residents of Camden, Maine and have long loved the sea. Decided to take our daughters and my wife's twin sister out for a day sail today. What an incredibly fun time. Capt John, Boatswain Matt and Sidney were professional, very funny and showed us all a great time. My wife's twin took a long turn at the helm and fell in love with boats and the sea almost immediately. This crew is a credit to the boat and the boat is a beauty to be sure. I would sail her again in a heartbeat (and if truth be told I'd follow the crew to another boat if I heard they were crewing elsewhere; they're that good). PS - great bloody marys. What else do you need? William F. House, MD Camden, Maine

Our expectations were exceeded tremendously after our tour on the Appledore II. The crew was personable and informative, working to create such an enjoyable time. The crew instilled a simplicity that can only be communicated from those who have found and mastered life's true "joys". Following the cruise, I found myself reflecting on my own life motivated to find joy in simplicity. A two hour sail felt far too short as we made our way back, we reluctantly deboarded the Appledore II with memories that will last a lifetime. We hope to join the crew in Key West someday, or for a second go round in Camden! Thank you to Capt. Bubbles, Matt and Sydney - the infamous crew of Appledore II, Camden ME. PS - if you are still in search of an RN for your sail down the coast to Key West, I think I can be available for those days and would be happy to provide you with my resume.
