What To Expect
1
Schooner Appledore II Windjammer Cruise
If you always wanted to sail your own wooden ship, this is your chance. The crew welcomes your participation - offer to help raise the sails and take a turn at the wheel. The Appledore II is a hard working, seaworthy schooner. She has sailed around the world, docking at many harbors along the way. Twice a year, she still sails the Eastern seaboard between her two home ports of Camden, Maine and Key West, Florida. Ask your crew about her history, some have made this bi-annual 2,000 mile sailing trip. Our day sail on the Appledore II schooner departs from Bayview Landing, taking you out of Camden Harbor. Camden is often called the “jewel of the Maine coast” which becomes clear as you sail past the impressive lighthouse, Curtis Island Light, dating from 1836 and into Penobscot Bay. Considered to be one of the top cruising bays in the world, Penobscot Bay will amaze you with its uninhabited islands, wildlife and views of Camden Hills and other coastal mountains dropping off into the sea. During your Camden boat tour, look along the shore for Mount Battie, historic inns, and elegant summer mansions of the rich and famous with their million dollar yachts. Watch lobstermen hauling in their traps. On a typical day, you may see porpoises playing in the water, ospreys and eagles hunting for fish and even the occasional whale. Watch for seals sunning themselves on rocks and cute guillernots, cousins to puffins, with their bright red feet, wobbling as they walk along the rocky shoreline. Quench your thirst with cocktails, beer, wine and soft drinks, all available for purchase during your sailing cruise. As Camden Harbor comes back into view, relax and feel the wind sweep through your hair as your memorable sailing ship cruise draws to a close.

We loved our 2 hour sail on Appledore II. It was a lovely way to see the harbor in Camden, and felt like a really authentic sailing experience. The crew was friendly and very knowledgeable. Definitely made us hungry for more sailing adventures!

The Appledore Windjammer two-hour cruise was truly one of the highlights of our Maine vacation! We chose the 10 AM cruise and booked online for $40/ea. Very reasonably priced for such a priceless experience! The crew was very friendly and personable. The ship only holds 49 passengers so there is room for everyone to sit as well as get up and walk around while sailing. The weather that day was spectacular. Bright blue skies with sunshine shimmering on the water! The crew let the passengers volunteer to help hoist the sails, which was a memorable experience for yours truly! They explained the sails and their functions and purpose. Once the sails were up, the ship just glided silently in the sparkling sunshine across the beautiful blue water! Wow! The captain let the children (and adults if need be!) hold the wheel while sailing and take photos. They offer drinks for sale. The head is located below deck (climb the ladder down). You may tip the crew as you debark. One good tip for parking while you are in Camden: The local library up the hill! It's free, in the shade and within walking distance to downtown. I would highly recommend treating yourself to this windjammer experience!

First time on the Appledore....will not be the last. Took our friends from Pa on the 2hour Minnow and we all enjoyed every second. The staff was courteous, funny and knowledgeable. Maine is an enchanting place but even more so from a gorgeous sailboat out of Camden into the Penobscot bay.
