Overview

Your experience is very unique because it is on a specifically designed whale watching boat. There will be only up to 13 guests aboard so there is plenty of room inside and out for everyone. Your experienced captain is a local resident with a great deal of knowledge of the wildlife and area, and lots of good stories to tell. Our tour length ensures that you have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the beauty of our area and the incredible wildlife. We’ve been sharing our part of the world with enthusiastic guests for over 25 years and would love to share it with you, too.

What To Expect

Hoonah

We will meet you at the Excursions Hub and transport you in our van to Hoonah (a 5-minute drive), where you will board the boat for your whale and wildlife tour. After returning to the harbor, you'll be met by the van and driven back to Icy Strait Point.

Had an incredible day. Came into Icy Strait Point on a cruise ship, Teresa was waiting at the excursion hub and quickly took us to the dock to meet Casey and our boat. We left the dock and Casey gave us some info and history of the area. We were lucky enough to see some breaching humpbacks, a bear, some sea lions and some eagles. After our morning on the water we had a quick trip back to icy strait. Overall a great day out.

This tour was a highlight of our whole Alaska adventure. It was our third time in Icy Strait Point, our most favorite of the Alaska cruises ports of call. On our previous visits we went on whale watching excursions through the cruise ship, because I’m nervous about booking excursions independently. And while we had a good time on those big boat excursions, we couldn’t help but be jealous of the lucky people we saw in the small boats close to the water, while we were up high with a hundred other people. So we decided this time we’d venture out and be those lucky people on the small boat, and it was INCREDIBLE!!!!!! I booked this a year in advance to make sure we got it. Teresa was wonderful, extremely responsive and couldn’t be a nicer person. She even went out of her way to meet us that morning at a kayak excursion we had in the morning to make sure we knew where to meet the boat in the afternoon so that we could just stay in Hoonah instead of having to go back to the port to be picked up. We were totally blown away by her kindness and dedication. The whale watching itself was everything we thought it would be and more. The boat was clean, comfortable, stable and smooth, our captain Casey was incredible at finding the whales and providing a lot of information about them, as well as about daily life in Hoonah. We found ourselves surrounded by a group of 28 humpback whales bubble net feeding for the majority of our tour. It was breathtaking and jaw dropping and something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life. Casey even put a microphone into the water and we got to hear the whales singing. This was a once in a lifetime experience. Next time we get to go to back to Alaska this will be the first excursion I book!

We had a blast on this whale watching adventure. Our captain, Casey, received word from his father that orcas were active in the area. We immediately headed to the area and were so excited to see two pods of orcas. We watched the pods interact for several minutes with the orcas coming close to the boat a few times. With the small group of people on the tour, we never felt crowded and enjoyed the information we were given. This family operated tour goes above and beyond to ensure that the entire experience is enjoyed by all. One thing that really stuck out to me was when a competing whale watching tour radioed to ask if we had seen anything, Casey did not hesitate to share the coordinates with the other tour operator for them to have a chance to take their group to see the orcas. I, without hesitation, recommend this tour!
