Our party was comprised of both Tourists and Guides. Alex was the lead and we started inside Stinky Bklyn, which surprisingly does not sell second hand shoes but is rather a fantastic Deli, which specializes in cheeses but also promotes new and upcoming local products and really provided an excellent start to the tour; whilst we were there, the owner of the store came in and was happy to explain the collaborative way that he operates and some of the surrounding history of the area. (it was a unique insight). Alex is a great asset to Urban Oster Tours, as he grew up in the locality and also has a wealth of local knowledge that he is happy to share. We spent the next few hours walking around the vicinity into carefully select establishments which showcased the various local produce in Brooklyn, ranging from Cheese, Bagels 'n Lox, Spinach Pie (Damascus Bakery), Italian Pizza, Brooklyn beer, Chocolate Egg Cream (Brooklyn Farmacy... which was originally a Pharmacy, and still has some of the original memorabilia), and on to Cookies, Biscotti and locally roasted coffee. The tour had a great tempo with interesting walks where we were able to appreciate several distinct districts within Brooklyn including some of the "Brownstone" Architecture, along with some illuminating insight into how Brooklyn as evolved and changed over the years. It was also good to see that the tour company and its guides are encouraged to share knowledge within team members. I would highly recommend this tour as a great way to spend a couple of hours, appreciating Brooklyn and also the thriving local food culture.
