Dogsled and Reindeer Day Trip to Borealis Basecamp

Aperçu
We work exclusively with local, passionate mushers who view their dog teams as their family, and you will have the chance to understand this incredible sport on your hourlong ride through the snowy forest. You will ride on a genuine dogsled, either seated or standing, as the team of 8 dogs swings through the forest with you and your guide at a comfortable but thrilling pace. You will also have the chance to see the dog kennels, and a replica of a dog-sled race checkpoint, where the competitive mushers stop for fuel and rest on their long winter races.

On your reindeer tour, our experienced reindeer handlers will introduce you to the herd of reindeer at Borealis Basecamp, and you can feed, meet, and take pictures with these incredible animals.

Interacting with the dogs, mushers, and reindeer. Only negative would be to make sure all guests are present for each event before starting, which might mean providing more time between scheduled events.

Pickup from hotel to excursion sight was on time. Staff was polite and ensured that I was winter-proof before I partaken in any of the events. The weather is no joke here at Winter so, make sure you are in layers! Food was great. I had the chicken with fried noodles. The waitress service was great as well. She was friendly and made it feel homely. I had fun dogsledding. I got the chance to pet and play with the dogs and pups. I’m normally not a dog person, but these dogs were awesome. One dog specifically kept coming to me for pets and hugs. 😝 I also did not expect the dogs to have so much power in them in pulling the sled. It was awesome. The dog musher also helped me take pics with the dogs. 👍 I also got the chance to alternate from sitting in the sled to standing behind it half way through the trail. The sitting experience does require you to grip on the sides of the sled to prevent you from flying off and the standing part feels like cross country skiing. After the event, the mushers share their experiences and stories in participating in the dogsled racing competitions, precautions, history, and the types of sleds used. It was a great listen. The reindeer (caribou) walk was peaceful and was a great way to end the day. Cooper, the leader of the group, was very informative about the deers and the flora around the area. He allowed me to take reins of the deers as I walked them. The feeding was awesome, the deers kept coming to me specifically for hand-feeding. We were also able to see the deers be released into the wild in the end. There are some extra complementary excursions you could partake in like snow tubing (will not open unless there is a lot of powder snow), trail walking (deer trail or 2x pipe line trails in varying terrain difficulty), etc. I want to forewarn those who are taking part on the reindeer trail hike. It is no joke. The hike can be tiring when you have a lot of gear on. It takes about 30-40 minutes to finish without rest. For the pipeline trails, it takes about 1 hour 1/2 to reach the ends of it. Other than that, it was a fun day. Good way to get to exercise in and take in that pristine mountain air.
