Although our tour guide was very kind and some of the folk in our group (12 of us) were fun to chat with, the food we received was underwhelming. There was enough food to make us full as promised, however it wasn't the type of Charleston cuisine I was hoping to sample. We had sweet cornbread and a pulled pork sandwich; then to the market for a biscuit w/jam; next was the main event where we had succatash, pineapple rice, and mussels (the most SC type food we had). Last place we had a piece of chocolate cake which was too sweet. Many (including myself) chose to take it to go. Still, I'm not sure I'll eat it; it wasn't special. What was I looking for? shrimp/grits, she crab soup, various rice that's grown here, ???. Things we heard a lot about but hadn't yet tried and were very curious about. Sadly we still haven't had that because we were too full to eat before we had to leave town. It was a short trip to Charleston. Next time we'll find places to eat on our own. Places we will try on our own based on various recommendations: Hannibal's and Fleet Landing. And we'll search out shrimp&grits, she crab soup, fried shrimp, and Huguenot Torte-- food we'd been hearing about and had hoped to taste on this tour.
