Built in 1861, by local architect James Gallier, Jr. as his private family residence, this Victorian French Quarter townhouse exemplifies architectural features that are not only unique to New Orleans, but also innovative and advanced for the period. Marked by an iconic Paris Green gate, the Royal street home includes an ornate interior décor, running hot and cold water, experimental skylight, intact attached slave quarters, and classic courtyard.

The best thing we did in Nola! During our visit in Dec '21, tours focused on the people who were enslaved at the Hermann-Grima house, what their lives were like, and how they were absolutely essential to supporting the lifestyle of the wealthy enslaving family. Our tour guide Lynette was fantastic, and explained how the institution of slavery had impacts on the physical design of the house and the fabric of urban planning in New Orleans. It was absolutely fascinating. Lynette focused on how different urban slavery was from the plantations we all learned about in school. I can't recommend this tour enough, and I wish other historic sites would put this kind of emphasis on telling the full story of their past.

We toured the house during Thanksgiving week. Peter was a very good guide. We learned the history of the people (residents) and the architecture/history of the house. It's like stepping into the history of mid-19th century New Orleans.
