Lovely experience and highly recommend the upgrading to the luxury cars - The Chief and Mary Colter. It’s adults only and non alcoholic beverages and snacks are free. Full bar in each car with wonderful service. Make sure to make your way to the platform on the back of the Chief.

Enjoyed thoroughly the train ride and the extras (funny car tour guide, musicians, photographer, Cripple Creek gang show). Beautiful part of the country, interesting history, very relaxing.

The train ride was scenic and smooth. The ticketing process was reasonably simple and straightforward. We rode up to the canyon in coach with a highly entertaining service attendant named Jane, she was good fun and very interactive. She made the ride memorable in more ways than just the scenery. There was also live musical entertainment, we enjoyed a guitar playing gentleman who sang some Johnny Cash among other things. We opted to take the Grand Tour bus ride when we arrived at the canyon. That was an OK choice. Mona, our guide, was very friendly and knowledgeable! She kept us on schedule and told stories and lessons throughout the tour. The Grand tour goes straight to lunch at the Maswik lodge. The lunch was just “ok”, served buffet style. No complaints. I wish we had known lunch was immediately following the train ride up because the kids all ate snacks on the train. The bus visited Yaki Point (furthest east point at the south rim), and Yavapai Point Geology Museum. We geek out on rocks and natural history so this was a good stop for us. I would have like to have learned more geology but understand that the tour is for a broader audience! Our bus returned to station in time to take a short walk to the El Tovar and Hopi House. The ride home we were in First Class. There was free beverages (non alcoholic) and a lovely snack bar with charcuterie. The cabin attendant served adult mixed drinks ($9.50/drink) and service was truly attentive. Passengers should come prepared with small bills in cash if you believe that service and entertainment staff deserve tips.
