The train experience was good, but being a visitor, I've experienced delightful food in arazona, but the café food was a disappointment

Horrible over priced experience. On our recent trip to Flagstaff we planned one day to see the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. We made the choice to take the Grand Canyon Railroad up and back. All the reviews seemed ok. We purchased the top view 1st class seats for my family of 4. We boarded on time staff seemed nice. The train is old and dirty. The windows were dirty and hard to see out of. We were willing to over look the smell and stuffiness as part of the historic experience. Then it happened. 1 hour and 50min into trip up. The train stopped. We broke down. We were stopped for 40min before any announcement was made. Then they announced one of 2 engines was broken. They said they would have to break train in 1/2. Take front part of train last 7miles to Grand Canyon . Then come back to get second half. Back half has all the more expensive seats. We were stranded for 3 hours. Trapped with limited power and A/C. The spot we were stranded had no cell phone service. Once the working engine returned to get back half of train we had 1 hour and 45 minutes at Grand Canyon. Then had to suffer a 2 hour 20min return trip. The lack of planning and communication by staff was unacceptable. Don’t waste your money on this old dirty train. Drive your car in under an hour and spend more time at the south rim.

We had a hotel in Grand Canyon village and didn’t know that the train boarded at Williams and brought us back to Williams for the whole experience of round travel so had to drive to Williams and then back. The experience itself was enjoyable . The PSWs were informative. Might be a better experience with a bigger group or something . The kids were tired and seemed like a waste to go back to Williams to pick up the car.
