My wife and I have been visiting in the San Juans, staying at the Outlook Inn, and going Orca Whale Watching on the Eclipse with Captain Dan and his wife Denise every July 4th for 5 years now. We look forward to this all year,...especially on cold wet winter evenings. We always see Orca whales,...sometimes very close indeed. The Southern resident Whales (J, K, and L pods) all have names,...everyone knows them, and celebrates new births and passings, too. We saw Ruffles last summer, hunting with his mom, Granny, and he disappeared last winter (he was in his 60s, and Granny is close to 100 years old). As with people, the males do not survive as long as the ladies. Even if we did not see a single whale, we would still go out, just to be out on the water, in the Harrow Strait, on a bright sunny summer day,...just exhilerating. Note, if you have never been to this spectacular part of the world, you owe yourself a treat. The Eclipse is comfortable, and roomy. It is a great experience for children. There are very experienced naturalists as part of the crew, who share their observations on the whales. The trip lasts 3.5 hours,...and is often a bit physically tiring, if you are not accustomed to being on open water in the wind and sun. We always sleep well after going out. If we could, we would go out on the Eclipse everyday, honestly. It is that much fun. Looking forward to next year,....this trip, it was so clear, that we could see Mt Ranier from just south of San Juan Island, over 135 miles away.

I really liked my whale-watching tour with Eclipse Charters leaving from beautiful Orcas Island! We saw Orca whales and dolphins, and lots of birds including bald eagles. This tour boat is pretty big and stable, with an indoor cabin downstairs, a snack bar with coffee, a bathroom and an open upstairs. The captain is very nice. He invited us all to come up and talk with him about what he does. I sat up there with him for a while and found it very interesting. He's been doing this for about 20 years and has all the connections to find the whales. We went all the way to Canadian waters following a pod of Orcas. The naturalist on board was able to identify the pod and even the individual whales and tell us how old they were and how they were related! They knew the way they would be traveling and in which direction. They told us where to look to catch a look at them. I saw one spy-hop twice, close to the boat! Cool! There were actually other pods in the area, so it was kinda hard to pick which to look at. I was so impressed with this tour and would recommend it to anyone going to Orcas Island. I had been to Orcas many times and was so happy to actually do this tour this time.

Amazing day on the water! The crew and captain are knowledgeable and experienced and love what they do. Worth every penny and highly recommended as the tour to go on for your whale watching experience!
