We had a brief stay in Rotorua and had already visited a Maori cultural experience during the day, but we booked this on impulse after seeing the leaflet for the evening experience including hangi and glow worms. It was incredible.
We were collected from our accommodation and driven to Mitai village. We were the first to arrive and were shown to our table in the dining room. When the rest of the guest arrived we were given an introductory talk by our guide, then we were shown around some of the village, and watched the Maori warriors arrive by canoe in the stream. We were shown the hangi fresh from the ground, and then watched the cultural performance of combat, song, dance, and games. It was spiritual, but also informative and entertaining. The hangi was served as a buffet and was delicious. Following the meal we saw some more of the village by night, ending with the glow worms. An amazing evening to end our time in Rotorua.
