We docked at Skagway then took a ferry to Haines. Commentary on the way about the area and the indigenous people who lived there. Rafting very well organised esp as we had a heatwave and there was a lot of glacier melt making the river faster in places. Our guide was very informative and although we didn’t see much wildlife other than bald eagles it was a very relaxing way to spend an afternoon. No white water rafting! Lunch was provided once we got off the raft. Had a tour around Haines before getting back onto the ferry. Out of a 6 hour round trip you actually on the raft for 1.5 hours. I really enjoyed it.

Thanks for this thorough review. Our rafting tour from Skagway is a complete experience- combining the catamaran ride round trip, the scenic drive and the time on the river. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. We never guarantee wildlife and, on hot, sunny days, the wildlife often stays in the shade. Yes it is true we do not offer whitewater rafting. Our goal is to use the river raft as a way to experience wild country that is not accessible by road. We are not after an adrenaline rush- just the opposite. We want you to experience the serenity that only wild nature can provide.

Very peaceful and scenic trip down the river. Our guide, Russ, was very knowledgeable and full of interesting information about every aspect of the trip. No white water to worry about and everyone stayed dry! I even recommend for families with small kids!

Our experience with Steve Ritzinger as our guide through the Bald Eagle preserve was great! Steve was very knowledgeable about the birds and the area/river we were in. He was very willing to answer any questions we had. We were a little early in the season, before the salmon run began, to see a ton of the eagles. However, we did see eagles and got some great pictures. It was a very memorable experience. We really enjoyed the float! We highly recommend this activity with this guide.

Thanks so much for this positive review. Steve is a very experienced river guide here in the Chilkat Valley and we feel fortunate to have him on our team. Steve is personable and enthusiastic as well as knowledgeable. I want to make sure our guests have realistic expectations about our float trips. Some folks come on our tours expecting to see hundreds, or even thousands, of bald eagles during the float trip. This simply is not realistic. During the summer months, the adult eagles are tied to their territories. The peak congregation of bald eagles in the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve takes place in November, well after the cruise ship season. Our float trips take place in the summer months, when the adult bald eagles are either on their nests or near their nests. They come and go to feed their young. There are lots of active nests in the area where we float. Our Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve float is more than an eagle watching tour, it is a chance to get away from the road and experience the quiet of the wilderness and learn about a unique area in Alaska.
