I’m from an area with a lot of light pollution and had never been to a dark site before so the stars were absolutely breathtaking. I don’t necessarily feel that I got much out of the tour, which could be partially because due to my aging eyes. There was only one person setting up the telescopes, which for our group had five people per telescope and no one monitoring their use, so if you have a greedy person in your group, you don’t necessarily get much time per person for viewing. Also, don’t expect to get a super clear view of what’s being shown because you’re not looking through a Hubble telescope. Just managing expectations… The speaker was informative but I think I would have been just as happy sitting in a chair looking at the sky myself without spending $250.

Regarding the clarity of the views, while our telescopes are among the best available for public stargazing, they cannot match the capabilities of space-based observatories like the Hubble telescope. The astronomer was very knowledgeable, and we learned a lot. However, it was extremely cold, which made it not quite as enjoyable. They had blankets, but they were not enough. We underestimated how cold it would actually be. Extremely grateful they had portal potties!

On the positive side, the guide was highly knowledgeable, and was able to answer a range of questions from people on the tour. Seeing various planets through the telescope was perfectly fine, but for me, not worth the high cost of the tour. Perhaps those who are really into astronomy enjoyed the tour more than me. If you simply want to star gaze in a dark night sky, there are various locations from where you can do this on your own in Sedona.
