Our annual celebration of all things orchid spotlights the vibrant setting of Mexico for The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism. Set off on a journey where the fusion of tradition and contemporary artistry takes center stage amid awe-inspiring displays of orchids, and wander through lush landscapes brought into vivid relief with thousands of flowers that showcase diverse ecosystems. Among bright arrangements of orchids in settings inspired by the bold, multicolored designs of Mexican modernist architect Luis Barragán, come visit a paradise of tropical beauty—without ever leaving the Bronx.

The garden has many areas that you're not allowed to enter. That makes sense. These areas have signs, gates, all sorts of things. We came here all the time and are familiar with all of this. Today we were walking and saw a path with a few traffic cones with several feet between them and a fully open gate. Being that they clearly mark everywhere else you can't go, this read as no cars allowed to us. After walking quite a distance we came to an area where a couple of employees ran out to yell at us like we were a couple of truant teens, explaining that the area we had walked through had several thousand volts of electricity and we "COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN KILLED!" They then ordered us to go back the way we came, where they had just told us we could have easily been killed. When I brought this up to management they said that it was our fault for walking in an area that has no clear indication not to go through it, and certainly nothing saying we would be in imminent lethal danger. I can only imagine what might have happened to a family with rambunctious kids who run around everywhere

I visited in August to check out the Alice in Wonderland themed exhibit. It’s too bad that most of the flowers bloom in spring as they would’ve complimented the displays. I enjoyed taking the tram at times since it was very hot during my visit. I took the train from Grand Central which lands you at the other entrance, but way better than walking through the neighbourhoods after getting off the subway for any solo female travellers.

If you are into gardening or a lover of nature this should be a must visit for you. In addition to flowers, streams, fountains and trees there are classes. The classes include cooking, earth worm growing, an Edible Academy and more. I attended a vegan cooking class and at the Edible Academy I learned how to make Dukkah. Dukkah is a mixture of herbs and seeds that is sometimes used to add flavor to dips, or you can use it as you see fit. After the class I was given the ingredients and the recipe. The Arboretum, was zen, beautiful and a must see.
