We did the East Side Royal Coconut Coast Tasting Tour. It started out on a plantation. We had to do a little walk out to the taro plants. It was very hot that day but they provided umbrellas for shade and bottles of water. We proceeded to drive our own vehicle following each other to a handful of farm to table restaurants. They all had a different vibe with great food and stories behind their establishment. We found a lot of hidden gems along the way. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and in the food industry herself. We thought it was definitely worth it and a unique way to learn about the area.

When planning what to do while in Kauai I knew I wanted to take a food tour which lead me to Tasting Kauai Food tours which had a Southern, Northern and Eastern side tour. After reading the descriptions I decide to take the Eastern tour since it emphasized the farm-to-restaurant concept. The eastern tour also included a local farm. We met at Kealia Farm. The young lady who led the tour was friendly. Note I cannot remember any of the people’s names but will include pictures of them. The farm tour was led by a very informative gentleman who was born and raised in the area. After the farm tour, we were given frozen mashed apple banana which tasted like a gelato. We then got into our cars and drove to Paliolo which was a few miles away in the city of Kapaa. We had a tasty half tri-tip sandwich and one of the owners talked about their history. We went back the next day and had dinner Paliola since two members of our group enjoyed it so much. We then all drove down the street to a French restaurant called JO2. The owner chief talked about his back ground and how he is working with the local farmers on what can be grown on Kauai. We had a vegan curry soup and fried green beans. The food was excellent and the next time we are in Kauai will eat dinner at JO2. At this point one member in our group was full. We then drove down the street to Kenji Burger which is Asian infusion burger place. The food was also excellent and I would go there again. Our final stop was at Oasis on the Beach which is in the Waipouli Beach Resort and to be honest I would never know it was there if it were not for the food tour. The executive chief came out for each presentation and gave us a description of what was being presented and the idea behind it. We had a refreshing beet salad and a chocolate dessert. The beet salad was my favorite dish of the tour. At the end of the tour we were all stuffed and happy. I would highly recommend this tour if you can fit one of the food tours into your vacation schedule that you will not be disappointed.

I recently participated in TastingKauai's North Shore tour. The tour was much different than I expected. I assumed we were visiting restaurant after restaurant, but instead we had a wide variety of tasting experiences coordinated so that each was a complement to the last. Most stops included a little walking in between which was a help since all portions were very generous. The stops were varied and interesting, including entrées, sweets, snacks and drinks. An added bonus was to meet and hear owners talk about their passion for their food and businesses. Catherine was an excellent guide. I hope to be able to take the east shore and south shore tours in the future. I highly recommend TastingKauai.
