Just returned an hour ago from our food tour in Kapaa. We hit six places starting with Haole Girl Sweets. Weird location in an industrial area, but food very good. Owner, Judy, does a nice take on both sweet and savory croissants. I had a Havarti, Mushroom, Onion croissant. Only down side on this stop was the owner, loving what she does, talked a bit too long. Catherine/Kathryn (sp?) had to give her a five minute warning and we hadn’t even had a bite of her creations yet. From there we went on to Kauai Juice Company. We sampled Kombucha. This was the least favorite stop as none of us fell in love with the Kombucha. The staff there were great, however. The next stop was the Pono Market for Poke. Wow!!! Worth the price of admission. Robert who hosted us was great. Poke was as good as it gets. Stop four was Saimin Dojo. Great stop as well. I loved my fried spam saimin. Owner, who also owns Wailua Shave Ice, was a delight. Stop five was Kenji Burger across the street. Burgers and sushi burrito and fries were off the hook. Then we ended up and the Oasis next door, for our last stop. Great setting on the beach. Had a savory Portuguese sausage croquette and a dark chocolate ice cream with whipped cream for dessert. Ended up having fifteen people on our food tour. Well, organized. Only downfall was the heat and humidity. Hot and sunny day made the afternoon tour a little toasty. I would like to check out the tour in the south and the tour in the north on future trips. If wondering, plan on skipping dinner and no need to have lunch before hand. Our tour guide, Catherine/Kathryn is a foodie herself, married to a chef. She is committed to food to table lifestyle and did a great job of herding us through our various stops.

My husband and I did the North Shore tour with Susan, and had a fantastic time. We got to meet the owners of a few places and loved the passion they exude into their businesses. Especially enjoyed the Uncle with the dried fruit. He just might have inspired me to become a farmer! As a local, it's easy to frequent you favorite spots, partly due to nostalgic reasons, but this tour was such an eye opener to what I've been missing out on. This food tour is great for visitors, but also important for local people as they have the daily impact on the island. Learning about responsible practices and how our island can sustain itself is vital for Kauai's future.

We did the South side tour in September, and really enjoyed it! Definitely for folks who love learning about food, and enjoy talking with creative, and hardworking business owners. I have to say that my husband, who isn’t that into food didn’t enjoy it quite as much as I did. Our group leader was young, and passionate about food, and what she was doing. She has a particular interest in food trucks. I’m afraid I don’t recall her name...so sorry! A nice assortment of people joined us. We visited Monkeypod Jams. We had beautiful baked goods, and jams. The owner spoke about creating her business, and the challenges of handling both the abundance, and the shortages of tropical fruits. The owner uses a rare type of white pineapple called the Sugarloaf. She cut one up for us...wow! So sweet! We made a point of buying several of the (expensive) fruit during our stay, and brought home a few to share with friends! We stopped at a dynamite food truck in Koloa. Dim N Den Sum. It was my tastiest stop! It was raining hard, so we didn’t get a chance to chat much with the nice couple who own the truck. We did make a point of visiting the later in our stay. Just delicious, We stopped at the local Kukui’ula Market, the only independent grocer left on the island. The owner seems to be a real community leader. She has a couple of local chefs who’ve set up shop within the market. There’s a healthy, fresh smoothie bar which was tasty, and then Makai Sushi. The chef there has personality plus, and it was fun to hear him, and the owner talk about buying fresh fish. We had Poke there. Just a beautiful dish! The off to a gelato shop... I’m afraid I don’t remember the name...in Poipu shopping center. The owner has an interesting story, and really uses high quality local ingredients. Finally we met at the Farmers Market at Kukui’ula shopping center. We talked with an amazing baker who has a croissant and baked goods booth. The customers were lined up to buy her products. We’re lucky she stepped away for a few minutes to talk with us! We ate delicious food all afternoon. I thought it was interesting to hear the message from everyone we spoke with. Shop locally, eat locally, embrace the local culture!
