We went on the North Shore tour and although this tour is very well thought out, it did not have the farm to market flair I was expecting. Food was plentiful & although a couple of places were very tasty, I'd have to rate the food as average overall. Michelle was absolutely delightful but for $120 per person, I hate to say I was very disappointed. Half that price or $75 would have been a lot more appropriate.

So, on our first full day in Kauai, we did the Kauai Food Tour Northshore with Michelle. She is awesome.....We met at the Northshore General Store and enjoyed a sample of oven brick pizza and chili pepper chicken, WOW! Then, off to Tiki Iniki for a Mai Tai, fish and chips and pork ribs. Quality, fabulous, taste, again fabulous! And Michele Rundgren, the owner, was so much fun and so engaging! Not only is she a rock star, literally, and married to a rock star, she is also a dress designer, ask her about her gorgeous dresses 😃 (And we went back for breakfast the next day). Now to Kauai Grill at the St Regis, elegant and delicious. Hanalei Taro and Juice Company for a sample of poi with pork and salmon. Just so you know, I love poi and this was soooo good. They also make poi based smoothies, yum! We then walked up to another food truck, Trucking Delicious, for a handmade green tea ice cream and chocolate cookie sandwich, are ya kidding!? Have two!! Chloe is a delight and is passionate about her food. We will be back this week for the ahi lunch special. Our final stop was the Waipa Foundation Farmers Market. Besides amazing fruits and veggies, we also bought Sal's Salsa, Kauai Kunana Dairy marinated artichoke chèvre, Pono Taro Chips, Hawaiian Healing Arts Ylang Ylang Oil and spearmint and lavendar soap from Waiiti Soaps. Best way to start a trip for introduction to the local cuisine. Just do it!

Out of all of the activities we planned for our trip to Kauai, this was the one I was looking forward to the most because I love to cook, love to try new food, and love to learn the history of where the food comes from and hear the stories of the people that serve it. I appreciate food that is sourced locally and love to spend my money on those that start their own business with that in mind. With that being said, I had mixed feelings about the North Shore tour. Let me start out by saying, it had nothing to do with our guide, Michelle. She was absolutely fabulous and had a lot of knowledge about the island and owners of the eateries we visited. Without her, the tour would've been a bummer. We started in Princeville and our first two stops were our favorite even though one was an eatery in a gas station. Though the food at the gas station was decent, the owner was what made us go back on another day to support his business. He had a great story on how he got started and truly showed a passion for what he does. We had some chicken, rice, and pizza during the tour but went back to try the burger which as also decent. Our second stop was a place called Tiki Iniki and was our favorite place. The owner was informative and shared her love for the Tiki culture and the island. She was the most engaging owner we met on the tour and her food was the best. We sampled some ribs and had a Mai Tai which was wonderful. We went back here as well for lunch another day and had wonderful food. I had an Ahi Wrap and my husband had a Fish Sandwich. This is a must if you are on the North Shore. After Tiki Iniki, the tour went South (not literally) from there. The stops just were not what I had expected from the tour. We went to the Westin where we had a Crab Cake Burger. It was okay but I didn't understand how a visit to the Westin showcased the island of Kauai. We sat in an empty room inside and the F&B Director didn't seem like he was very excited to have us there. He didn't have much of a story or share anything related to the island that would make a stop there worthwhile. Maybe if we sat outside with a beautiful view of Kauai that would've helped but it seemed like a wasted stop. From there we went to Hanalei (a fun little town) and visited two food trucks. It didn't help that it started to pour rain, but the food truck stops were not very good. The first served us Pork with Poi. I do have to say, the Poi was okay mixed with the Pork and I actually found myself enjoying it. I was disappointed that the owner did not even come out to talk with us to explain their story which was probably the one most closely related to the history of Kauai being that they farmed Tarro to make Poi. So that was a let down. The second food truck owner had a great story being the youngest to start her business at 19. She did a decent job talking to us about her story while in the rain but had to hurry back to help her employee. The mango ice cream sandwich was decent but had a salty seasoning (I forget the name) that was a little overbearing so I couldn't finish it. Finally, we ended at the Farmer's Market. There was a good variety of local fruits and vegetables which was great but there was nothing there that I couldn't get at my local Farmer's Market. Seemed like just a filler stop to eat up time. While I feel like we had two good stops (Tiki Iniki the only one with great food) on this tour and Michelle was wonderful, I thought the price tag was pretty steep. Most of the food tour prices I've seen are around $40-$75 with five to six really good stops. This was approximately $125 per person. You also have to drive yourself to each of the stops. Maybe the South Shore tour is worth that price but the North Shore definitely isn't. I'm sure the tour changes but if you plan on this activity, I would try to see what stops you will be making prior to booking. Unfortunately, with our experience I just can't recommend it. I'd rather spend the $125 and have a good meal and a few Mai Tais at Tiki Inikis! I did give this review 3 stars because of the first two stops and Michelle. Otherwise, I would've given it 1 star.
