My husband and I took the 3:00 food tour with “Hoon” Calhoun. He was an absolute riot! He made the tour fun, interactive and added a number of great personal connections to low country cooking and the charm of Charleston. He definitely made the tour! We started out at Eli’s Table, which was my favorite stop. We tried sweet potato pancakes, shrimp and grits and chicken and waffles. All were great! The Chicken and waffles was my favorite thing I ate on our trip. The second stop was Poogan’s Smoke House. We tried pimento cheese fritters, mini barbecue sandwiches and some amazing cornbread. The next s
top was Low Country Bistro. We tried oysters, fried green tomatoes and fried green okra. These were ok, but not as tasty as the first two stops. The final stop for dessert was great. I can’t recall the name, but it was near the water front and we had a very light cake with vanilla and peaches. The chef came out and talked to us and was very accommodating. Overall a great experience and definitely worth doing in Charleston. An added benefit was the walking portion of the tour and the insights the guide offered throughout. The portions are very generous, definitely skip lunch before!
