My snorkel/Snuba trip to Molokini and Turtle Town on 2/22/22 was not only a high point of my recent trip to Maui, it is a definitely a high point in my life. The crew was amazing and very skilled. Everyone went above and beyond for me. Whitney greeted me with much enthusiasm, even after I tripped in the wee, dusk hours-I arrived at 625am for a 645am arrival time-and skinned my right knee. They helped me and assured me that as long as I could walk and climb, I could go. Whitney schooled me on the best seat for whale watching as I was third in line. I met Annie, who was in charge of Snuba and she got me signed up straight away. As you board you meet photographer Marley, the coolest guy with a welcoming smile who takes your first pre-embark photo. This cruise includes a continental breakfast and light lunch. Anthony was right there to help this 60 year old up two flights of steep stairs with my plate of fresh fruit, muffins, and beverage. Had I known we would get to see whales and dolphins I might not have booked a separate trip, but this is not ther Calypso's fault. I just point it out to say that this is an added perk of this trip if you are there during whale season. We saw close tail flaps, fin waves, and nose breeches. At some point as soon as you head out, everyone in the crew further introduces themselves to you. Annie comes with paperwork for Snuba, Marley comes to arm band all that want additional photos which I highly recommend because of his expertise and diving skills, and others to check on you. All who have signed up for Snuba are called to the first deck for thorough and well communicated instructions that as you find out later you will need to follow. If you've ever wanted a small taste what scuba diving might be like, I highly recommend Snuba. This experience changed me in a way that is hard to express. I chose the second group at Molokini so as to get used to the feel of the water while snorkeling and orient myself to Molokini. I highly suggest doing your Snuba dive here if you can instead of Turtle Town due to the clarity of the water. During the Snuba Annie and the assistant Teague who helped me with my wet suit, were amazing. They make sure everyone is good to dive down and communicate well with the well instructed hand signals and little white boards. Annie let us know that she could hear whales and what fish and other sea life we were viewing. Teague was near me the whole time and so much fun underwater. When we came out of the water and he told me that I killed and am a natural, it was sincere and meant a lot to me. Annie also told me I did very well. Marley was right there diving with us and taking great pics without being in the way. He became a welcomed part of the whole experience above and below the surface of the water as well as on the boat. In fact once you're in the water, you learn that the entire crew has experience in either sea life, life guard/life saving, scuba/Snuba, or some combination of these. They are all very well skilled in the service industry as well as in the water. For example, Whitney who greeted me was helping with life guard duties as was Anthony and Boz who was great with snorkeling and fins setup for every passenger on the way out to Molokini. There were others whose names I can't remember at this point but all were helpful. And the captain was also great and well skilled. We saw a pod of not so shy at all dolphins as we arrived at Turtle Town (near Makena Beach). I had a close encounter with a sea turtle coming up for air and this large turtle led me to a cave where I saw an octopus, a puffer fish facing off with a long nosed neon eel of some kind, and many schools of fish. On the way back to the dock, I enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich and coleslaw with more fresh fruit. The crew is great about announcing how to settle up bar tabs and/or other add-ons if any (Snuba, Marley photos, etc). Everyone said goodbye to me and took pics with me, and I'm sure they did with any disembarking passengers who wished to do so. I suggest arriving early as close parking might be limited. There is plenty of parking at the shopping area nearby but it would be a little bit more of a walk that you should plan for. When I return to Maui and I will I would do this trip again if I decide not to spend a lot more money on a smaller boat but that would be the only reason. Everyone I mentioned treated me in a way that was so special to me, I actually miss them now that I'm home, and I can't really say that about my other excursions while I was there. And it isn't that the other excursions weren't wonderful in their own way. It's that the Calypso experience on 2/22/22 was way way so above and beyond every other paid excursion while in Maui, that it was the highlight of my trip. Mahalo and aloha to you all!!
