The Grand Canyon Rails to the Rim was the top reason we chose to stay in Williams as opposed to Sedona. We thought it would be a different experience to ride the train into the Grand Canyon. We purchased first class tickets for myself and my 2 children. My husband drove so that we can visit other places in the park more conveniently. Sadly the experience was very disappointing in that everyone got their photos taken by the staff photographer but us. The hostess went by to collect trash from all passengers except from my kids. Then when we finally go to the Grand Canyon, I wanted to take a picture of my kids at the caboose engine. I asked the young blonde female attendant if they could stand on the back caboose platform for a quick picture, she preceded to ask if we rode the train. I said yes. She said, “Coach?” I said no, first class and she still said, “no.” I think that was the last straw in this unpleasant trip on the Grand Canyon Railway. We have been all over the United States and to other countries and I’m not one to claim racism often, but it sure felt like it in this case. After reading some other reviews here, I’m more certain of it now. What a disgrace to the tradition of the railway. I’d suggest the management relook at their employee training, it’s 2019, this should not be happening, especially in multiple incidences. We ended up not returning on the train, we would rather forfeit our tickets than stand for this type of treatment.

The train ride from Williams is a great way to get to the Grand Canyon. We went in May 2019 and stayed at the Sheridan House Inn, which was incredible and Highly recommeded, and only a couple of minutes from the train depot. We were in the Luxury Dome car which included snacks, soft drinks and cash bar. The ride is great, perfect way to get there if you don't feel like driving. Our package included a bus tour and lunch. We boarded a bus and were taken to one stop only for tour buses, and not very crowded. the second stop was a little more crowded but not unbearable. Now, the included buffet lunch was poor at best, so take the tour without lunch and save your money. There is time to eat at the restaurant on your own. For what they are charging for the buffet, it is close to being uneatable and really needs to be kicked up. The bus tour for us, was the way to go. The shuttle lines to get back to the depot were incredably long so when your only there for a few hours, lines are not your friend. The Grand Canyon is Magnificent.

One of the best parts is someone else does the driving to and from the canyon. On the way up, each car has a guide who will provide some history & information and make suggestions on the map so you are prepared when you reach the rim. Our guide was named Laura and she helped give my teenage son some challenges to look for and personalized her recommendations. On the way back, they entertain you with music and actors on horseback pretend to "rob" the train (you put the money in visible sight if you desire to participate). The downsides: you only have 3 short hours at the Rim, which is not long enough to get much father than the depot, especially if you're trying to get food too. Don't get food on the train, unless you want to be truly robbed.
