We rode this train roundtrip on June 3.
We purchased our tickets online and exchanged the voucher for tickets at the depot. We reserved two seats (Luxury Dome) and were assigned the FRED HARVEY car and the train was pulled by the steam locomotive. Tickets are a little on the pricey side at just about $250/person, but I think it was worth it for a one time shot.
Prior to departure there is a live action western themed show that lasts about 15 minutes. Is it hokey, yes, but still enjoyable and the characters interact nicely with the patrons. You will see these guys later.
We departed Williams around 0930 and arrived at Grand Canyon Village around 1140. Departing GCV at 1530 and arriving back at Williams just before 1800. This allows you just under 4 hours to explore the GCV area and take the shuttle buses to see other parts of the canyon.
It was a pleasant journey, saw many people waving at the train as we went by, we were provided a buffet for food, free soft drinks/water, and alcohol for purchase, entertained by wandering minstrels (father and son duo), and a staged hold up. The staff aboard were fantastic including Noel the car steward, George our conductor and Sue the purser.
A couple of tips.
Bring cash for tips for the entertainers and crew.
If you want to eat upon arrival at GCV I recommend going to a restaurant immediately then explore.
We rode the shuttle then returned to GCV for lunch and were told it would be a 45-minute wait, but time was short.
