The history! It was very educational seeing everything! It was an amazing feeling knowing your in the same house Abe Lincoln had been himself!

Step back into time to learn more about the lifestyle and the childhood of Mary Todd Lincoln in the Todd house on Main Street in Lexington. The courtyard gardens, while small, make lovely use of every bit of space, and the house features some objects that actually belonged to the Todd family. I could just imagine 16 children of various ages running up the stairs and then sliding down the bannisters. I expect that many of the social elite of Lexington were received at one time or another in one of the twin parlors and that Mary Todd herself conversed and discussed literature or listened to the piano in that space. The story of the rescue of this historic building from becoming just another parking lot to become the first museum dedicated to a First Lady is a wonderful tale to hear from the guides whose love and appreciation of history of this place is also on display.

This charming piece of history is a must see! Although our tour was self guided, the gracious staff delivered the best informal history lesson. My daughters, ages 11 & 18, both approved!! From the architecture to the artifacts, this house museum is rich in both African American and American history. I also recommend visiting Lexington Cemetery, which is only a few minutes away from the Mary Todd Lincoln House. It’s picturesque & home of the world’s largest American Basswood tree. We caught the Cherry Blossoms in bloom. Pictures Galore!
