We originally were signed up for 2 days of boat diving, but COVID-19 required us to change our plans. Eric, the owner, suggested shore dives as an alternative, and we jumped at the chance to get as close to the original experience as we were hoping for our vacation. We did 2 shore dives during the day from Airport Beach and Mala Pier, and a couple of days later went back to Airport Beach for a twilight dive and a night dive. We have 2 teen boys, ages 13 and 16, that were just certified in November, so they had never done a shore dive or a night dive before. Entry and exit for shore dives in the Pacific can be a bit difficult, but we didn't have any problems during the day dive at Airport. Mala Pier has a rocky entry/exit and we were a bit awkward there -- we should have worn booties. I got knocked down during my exit from the twilight dive and during my entry for the night dive (waves were bigger at that time), but everybody else did fine. Shelby, our guide, was incredibly helpful and gracious as we muddled through. As far as big animals, we saw eels on all the dives, and lots of turtles at Mala Pier. The night dive was very interesting as it really focused your attention on some of smaller wildlife, and we covered our torches for a few minutes to see the bio-luminescence. We wore our own wetsuits for the day dives, but borrowed 5 mm for the twilight/night dives, and we probably should have worn the thicker suits for the day dives as well - it was a bit chilly. All the equipment was in good shape, and Shelby took really good care of us. Thanks to Eric, Shelby and the crew behind the scenes for doing everything they could to make it memorable for us!
