We did this adventure on Monday, August 8 and our guides were Mike and Paul and they were excellent. We had an awesome time and getting up close and personal with the Mendenhall Glacier. We had a good group of rowers and our canoe trip wasn't bad even with some wind that was in our face both ways.
Honestly, I suspected the glacier wasn't too dangerous to walk on but once you get up close, you see it for yourself, the dirt, mud and rocks are falling all over and the helmet they provide is needed. The adventure is safe as long as you listen.
I considered just hiking out to see the glacier on my own but the trail is long and rough versus an enjoyable and smooth canoe ride. Mike and Paul made sure everyone was staying safe. There are some big boulders perched on the ice and it looks like they can fall at any second.
We also stopped in front of the Nugget Falls and seeing it from a different prospective was cool. We had a car in town but we still rode out with the tour from Juneau and Mike provided useful information during the ride and I got to relax during the short ride out.
the whole process was smooth and the detail were taken care of, so we got to relax and have fun. What we learned by taking this trip is the reality of how fast these glaciers are disappearing. To see it for yourself is shocking and sad. While rowing all I could think about is how Lake Meade is drying up but Mendenhall Glacier is melting away... there is no balance!
I suggest if you want to get up next to the glacier book this tour.
