After lots of research, I chose the sunset tour and it did not disappoint. Yes, you can drive your car around MM but very rough and lots of potholes and you miss out on the narrative of the guide/driver who is Navajo and very proud of his history. Also, he takes you down the backroads where the public cars cannot go and to large caves where he played his flute. I thoroughly recommend taking a tour to get the full benefit of MM and in this case Monument Valley Guided Tours was terrific and an everlasting memory made.

Though the scale is 1-5, I wish I could give this tour 10 stars. I had no idea how much diverse and abundant wilderness was hidden behind the well known Mittens and Merrick Butte. Gorgeous rock formations were surprising us around every bend. Plus we got to visit two hogans and learn about the lifestyle of the Navajo inhabitants. It was a very thorough, entertaining and surprising tour. The tour guide, Jeanne, was absolutely wonderful- highly informative, warm, sincere and a whiz of a driver on those curvy, rolling sand roads. The open air jeep was comfortable and the foot rest and hand railing kept us secure as we had the most fun amusement ride I can ever remember experiencing.I highly recommend this tour with Jeanne. I wish I could do it again.
