This is something I absolutely recommend to do, you save money, save time waiting in line and getto see the best possible selction of attractions.
Loved this pass and so easy to use! Definitely worth the money - got to jump queues wherever we went - including the top of Rockafeller Centre (in the day) and the Empire State Building (at night) ... so we could get the skyline at different times! This included a 2 hour harbour lights / sunset cruise and it was beautiful .. even a bar on board so you can have a beer while watching the lights of New York switch on. What I loved was that there is a charge to see all these places (some are quite high) but with this pass we had already paid in advance so didn't have to worry about whether we could afford it or not. Highly recommend!!
The big advantage of purchasing the New York City Pass is that it saves you money. We were able to avoid some ticket lines but still had to wait in the attraction lines. (Two hours for Empire State building at arriving by 10p. Took in the breath taking views for only 20 minutes.) The most economical way to get around NY is the subway. I suggest getting a good map and become familiar with the stops where the attractions are. The booklet does have a tiny map with scant directions on where to get off.
