Privateer Schooner Sailing Tour w Salem Sound

FAME is annually the #1-rated boat in Salem and the #1 outdoor activity in the entire town, per TripAdvisor. Don't miss the very best of what Salem has to offer! There's more to our town than witches!

FAME is a full-scale replica of a privateer schooner from the War of 1812 that captured over 20 prizes! We sail up to five times a day between May and October from Pickering Wharf Marina in downtown Salem.

On board our traditional gaff-rigged schooner, you'll get a chance to raise the sails and even steer the boat as we sail Salem Sound and talk about the fisherman, traders, and privateers that played such a central role in the saga of Salem, and of the young United States.

This is a great hands-on adventure — but you can also just sit back and enjoy a beverage and take it all in as we cruise past the historic forts and lighthouses of Salem, Beverly, & Marblehead.

Note: although the captain & crew have plenty to tell you, this is NOT a narrated tour! No children under five allowed.

On the right day, a sail on the schooner Fame is perfect! You get to enjoy a nice sail at a reasonable price. The captain gives a quick background on the boat and the Islands and settlements that surround the Salem harbour. On a sunny, slightly breezy day make time to head down to Pickering Wharf and enjoy a cruise for about an hour and forty five minutes. There are snacks, drinks and booze options available at a reasonable price. For five bucks you enjoy a cold margarita and or beer. Pretty reasonable, I'd say. There is a washroom aboard the Fame, but no idea the conditions of the "head" as myself and buddy did not use the facilities. If you enjoy the sea air and the sails, I'd recommend the Fame for a fabulous time!

What a great boat. The crew were so nice getting people involved, like helping with the sails. Our Captain Mike was very informative and took a true interest in each person on the boat. Only regret was we did not have enough time in Salem, so we are coming back with our RV and staying for a couple of days and will sail again on the FAME!

On my recent visit to Salem, MA, I booked my friend and I on the 2 hour cruise "Rum and Revolution" aboard the Fame. Brilliant weather was complimented by music, history lessons, and even a lesson on how to dance the hornpipe delivered by "Tobias". I was even afforded the opportunity to help hoist the main and foresails. The view of Salem Harbor was not to be forgotten, the crew was fast and happy, and the captain displayed a quick wit. (His statement upon seeing my friend's medical alert service dog was to ask if he was "a ratter".) There were various drinks available for sale, along with snacks and souvenirs. If you are interested in sailing, and wish to experience a brief taste of the seafaring lore, don't miss an opportunity to board the Schooner FAME of Salem
