Pros: it was a relaxing float down gray waterway. Being my first time in a raft, it was perfect for that. The guides were friendly and good at steering the rafts. Cons: it took a very long time of 45 minutes to ride the ferry from Skagway to Haines and then another 30 minute bus ride to get to the launch spot. This was repeated on the way back of course and we still got back to ship by 1 pm. Thus making most of the excursion travel. There was also no wildlife. Saw a couple of bald eagles but mostly just floated down river. Overall. Would not recommend.

Thanks for your honest appraisal of your experience. It is true that the tour is 6.5 hours from Skagway, and 1.5 hours of the total time of the excursion is spent traveling down the river. How re the 6.5 hours spent? The journey to the river is incredible. The 45 minute boat ride between Skagway and Haines takes you through a steep-walled fjord with waterfalls streaming down the granite cliffs. The drive up to the Bald Eagle Preserve is along a National Scenic Byway, and the scenery is world-class. The river trip itself takes you away from the road into the Alaskan wilderness. The truth is with wildlife viewing, there are no guarantees- each trip is different. And please remember, if it was super easy to get to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve from Skagway, which hosts over 1.2 million cruise ship visitors each summer, the river would be overcrowded. The fact that it takes time and money to get to the river, and the fact that expertise in river travel is needed in order to navigate through the channels, can make a river trip in the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve with Rainbow Glacier Adventures a quiet and unforgettable experience.

Steve was an excellent raft guide with good stories of the region. Aly our host driver was very knowledgeable with lots of information of the area, too. Good storytelling is always a bonus, thanks Steve and Aly!

Our guide was the owner and had so much to tell us about the area. He is also a wildlife photographer. We didn’t see much wildlife but had fun twisting and turning on the river - just ten of us which was perfect.

Yes I was your guide and I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed the raft trip twisting and turning down the river. I remember that day and it was beautiful with dramatic light and wonderful scenery. We almost always see bald eagles out along the Chilkat River and sometimes see other wildlife like bear, moose, otters and even wolves. But the main reason to go rafting with us is to get completely away from the road and experience the feeling of wilderness on the river. The river is a "highway" that gets you away from the paved highway. Being a glacial-fed river, the Chilkat is shallow and twisting and this keeps power boats away. So the idea is to immerse you in the Alaskan wilderness and that is what we did. I hope you can return for another tour with us.
