I had a bayou and plantation tour package, and it was awesome!
The tour was well-organized and engrossing - be prepared to soak all of these interesting facts about all kinds of things from swamp wildlife habitat to some obscure facts about slavery in Louisiana in comparison with other Southern states. Our tour guide (and driver as well), Ellen, was super knowledgeable and give us a local's perspective on Mardi Gras, French Quarter, what kind of places are worth visiting, and why... I like it!
Also, can't help but mention Kyle, the guide on Laura's plantation tour, and Auguste, the Houmas' house guide. Both were very thorough and detailed, and I was surprised by the depth of the research they had to make in order to prepare their tours. It seems like Kyle knows everything about the family that owned the Laura plantation and he's really digging into it, whereas Auguste amazed me by how he's own family story interwoven with the story of Houmas house and its residents; also, he was extremely funny yet refined, so to say.
Did I mention the tasty lunch they provide you with at Houma's house? It has many varieties of NOLA's signature cuisine, and It's a great alternative to the spendier places in the city if you want to try some of the local food.
Long story short - this tour was definitely worth spending money and time, and one certainly won't be disappointed taking it.
