My family and I took this train tour through the Verde Canyon while we were recently vising Sedona. The ride is about 4 hours round-trip, and you get some great photo opportunities along the way. You have the choice of sitting inside one of the train cars and watching the scenery roll by, or you can venture out to one of the many open cars that are part of the train for wider views and better photo shots. How much time you spend in the open air cars will definitely be determined by the weather. There are different seating options, but it's worth upgrading to first class seats to get the more comfortable seats with a table, and appetizers (chicken wings, cookies, fruit and veggie tray) and drinks. The drinks aren't included in the ticket, so there will be an added cost for that, but they do take credit cards so you don't have to carry a lot of cash onboard.

So a few tips - go to the area early and plan a visit to Tuzigoot National Monument for an hour or so prior to the train ride. The train depot is 5 minutes away. They have two types of railcars Coach and First Class. I really recommend the first class car, here is why: They provide appetizers which are all you can eat and include some substantial portions - we purchased food tickets ahead of time and did not need to. This is my point, the additional cost of eating at the depot makes up for the cost of the first class ticket. The 1st class is for sure a nicer ride with comfortable couches and plenty of legroom and tables. The also have waitstaff available for each car. The ride after hour 3 is pretty boring, many people were using this a 'nap' time. Open cars are shared and are a really neat way to see everything up close. Get into one of the open cars when the train changes direction Perkinsville, it is a neat show and the hosts tell you about the area. Be gracious with tips at the end of the ride! Toot toot!

Excellent off-beat day trip, along a rail spur laid over 100 years ago to meet the needs of the near-by copper mines at Jerome. The first class rail cars (recommended) formerly were the "lounge" cars in passenger trains such as the Santa Fe's Super Chief, on which our family travelled west to Arizona from Chicago in the 1940's. Talk about nostalgia! The trip is narrated by local experts, pointing out and commenting on notable sights, including the oldest exposed pre-Cambrian sedimentary rock formation anywhere in the world, pre-history indian dwellings in the cliffs, and wildlife, espcially the eagles. The trip is very well organized.
