The kayaking and hiking were great, but the guide (Mike) was perhaps the worst guide we've ever had. First of all, he was late for the tour, and when he finally did arrive, he didn't offer an apology to the group or even an acknowledgement that he was late. He did make an announcement that he would be the "group photographer" for our trip. More on that later.
Once we'd paddled to the trail and started hiking, Mike would randomly point things out to the first couple of people behind him, but the balance of the group (12 in total) couldn't hear a thing. He did stop twice and wait for the entire group to assemble before talking, but for the most part, only the two people behind him heard anything.
Once we arrived at the waterfall, Mike hiked up the hill to have lunch with other guides. Although he'd promised to reunite with our group once he was finished eating, he never did. Instead, he sat at a distance and chatted with friends. When we asked later what photos he'd gotten of us at the waterfall, he responded, "I didn't take any photos. No one asked me to."
When it was time to leave the waterfall area, he told our group of four to just "go ahead". We hiked on our own all the way back to the kayaks. (Thankfully a guide from another company helped us when we took a wrong turn on the trail.) Mike showed up at the kayaks, but after we got on the river to return to the marina, we never saw him again. A guide from a different company helped us get our kayak out of the water.
Throughout our trip, we saw other groups who had booked with different companies. Those guides were engaged and making a real effort to enhance the experience for their groups. I sure wish we'd chosen a different company.
