Way too expensive for the value we got. $200 per person might have been worth it if it was the summer and the glacier boat tour was included. But without it, it wasn’t worth the price of admission. If you have a car, you should drive the same route, visit the wildlife conservation center and save yourself the money.
We learned some new things but the value of that education was outweighed by our tour guide. He was a nice enough guide but started the tour by telling the 5 out of 6 people wearing masks that they didn’t need to wear them, since they’re annoying and “most tourists in Alaska are American and vaccinated.” Before we left the downtown area, he had already told us about his divorce and how he had to call the police on his ex-wife due to drug use (this was in the context of telling us why he left California to come to Alaska). At the midway point, as I was sitting in the van holding my sleeping toddler, he started talking politics - how guns don’t kill people, people kill people; how a bunch of Alaskans lost their jobs because the president wouldn’t let them access their resources. Regardless of whether I agree with him or not, it was uncomfortable, especially as a captive audience. Before and after the tour, the guide texted us photographs of some wildlife. But interspersed in those photos are photos of him and his wife - why would we want photos of our tour guide and his wife, whom we’ve never even met?
The rest of the tour was, thankfully, uneventful and as I said, we did learn some new things which is why I gave it 3 stars. But nothing could wash out the bad taste in my mouth and I would not take this tour again.
