The Needles Highway is more than a 14-mile road—it’s a spectacular drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen, and rugged granite mountains. The road’s name comes from the needlelike granite formations that seem to pierce the horizon along the highway. The roadway was carefully planned by former South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck, who marked the entire course on foot and by horseback. Construction was completed in 1922. Short stops at Sylvan Lake and for viewing unique rock formation called the Needle's Eye, so named for the opening created by wind, rain, freezing, and thawing.

The day of the tour was cloudy and raining. The tour was to visit Mount Rushmore and view the President's rock carvings. The tour guide was to pick us up at 8:00am, however he had not arrived at 8:40, so I phoned the local support number. I asked if our tour could be rescheduled to the next day as the forecast was fine and sunny. He advised that he did not have a tour guide available for the next day. The tour guide eventually arrived at 9:15am and advised the the clouds will lift and the tour would proceed. The clouds did not lift when we visited the Crazy Hourse rock carvings and we did not see any of the monument. We then went to Mount Rushmore to view the President's rock carvings. It was snowing on the way and when we arrived the President's rock carvings were not visible due to the heavy clouds. After about 1hr, the clouds lifted for about 10 minutes so we could view the President's rock carvings and it started to rain again. On the way home the tour said he would have taken us on the tour the following day. I am of the opinion that the tour Manager was not interested in giving us a good tour, he only wanted the money.

Hello David - I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your tour. The weather was bad that day but that was not the only problem. We had an incident with another couple that threw off the tours start time. As you know the other couple began the tour before we found out they had not paid and that lead to delay. Because of the late start our guide purchased lunch for you and your wife to try and make amends. As for the date of the tour . . . it was on the day you selected and reserved. That was the day I had the tour vehicle and guide available and we provided your tour to both Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Once again I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your tour. Be Well - Rich
