Having used the Big Bus company to tour around New York on a previous trip, and really enjoying the live commentary, we did not hesitate to use them again. However we were disappointed to find they did not have any live commentators on board this time, just recorded commentary which was far less entertaining. However on one sightseeing tour in particular, our driver Mark W, went above and beyond. Not only did he drive the bus, but at every stop he physically came to the top deck to check how many seats were available for people getting on. His energy and enthusiasm was infectious and he was thoroughly entertaining the way he interacted with the passengers. He was also very knowledgeable and because it was the anniversary of 9/11 and there were roads closed off, he gave advice about which stops to get off/back on - sometimes getting off the bus himself to point people in the right direction. It’s just a pity there is no live commentary anymore as Mark W would be fantastic. We used Big Bus a few times during our 3 day trip and Mark W stood out from the rest. He is a credit to the company.

For the high price, the commentary was really childish (annoying) and very light on facts. And the bus driver we had seemed to be in an hurry and was trying to beat every traffic light, and even skipped a stop which we wanted to get off at (WTC). It meant we had to spend extra money to get the subway to get to WTC.

Don't bother wasting your time. We booked this (both downtown and uptown routes)for our first day in New York to see the sights and help us work out what we wanted to visit. However after starting with the downtown tour at stop 8 (due to walking Brooklyn bridge at sunrise) we only did 5 stops before reaching stop 1 where we were told we needed to get off and get on a new bus as it was the end of the route even though we hadn't completed the route. We then had to wait in a long queue for over half an hour to board a new bus. To make it worse we saw the bus we got off pull up just a bit further to the pick up point and picked up new passengers. However the other buses that pulled up had passengers on which made us question why we were made to get off considering they had clearly got on before the 'first stop' too. After finally completing the downtown tour we proceeded to the uptown tour which was as much as a shambles. The bus waiting there was 'broken' which wasn't clearly explained and they let passengers sit on the bus for over 15 minutes without any explanation, the man organising things also just kept shouting at customers telling us not to move for the uptown tour. The uptown tour was the biggest waste of time and we spent most of the time listening to music rather than information. I would find a better way to explore the city than this considering we paid 328 dollars for 4 adults and it was a complete waste of time.

Amelia H, we work hard to provide a fantastic experience to everyone. It's discouraging to see that you had a negative experience. We apologize we did not communicate as clearly as possible. Each time our buses reach the end of the tour (at Stop #1 for the Downtown and Stop #19 for the Uptown), guests are asked to hop off and wait for the next available departure to allow our drivers to conduct safety checks before leaving for the next tour. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused and we will forward this to their managers so we can improve how we communicate this.
