Charleston City Market

Our Barn is located just off of the Charleston City Market. You will meet your certified tour guide here and then you will depart on your hour long horse or mule drawn carriage tour. The carriage will go through the City gate at the market where the tour guide is assigned a tour route. You will see about 30 blocks of the historic district which will include beautiful architecture, churches, buildings, gardens and more. The tour returns to the Big Red Barn.

After a less than stellar city tour on a motorcoach, we decided to give the horse-drawn carriage tour a try. I see how this may not be the best option in the punishing heat and humidity, but I really think it’s an experience only Charleston can offer and is the best way to go. These tours have 5 different routes so you can go on 2 of them and see different things, but unfortunately, you can’t plan it like that as it all depends on the traffic. I really had a great time with Palmetto Carriage Works! The tour guide was great and he took the time to explain how the company takes care of their horses, which was important to know. Compared to a motorcoach, the carriage tour can go through cobblestoned alleys you wouldn’t ordinarily see. Highly recommended!!!

Gay was our female driver. Elwood was the horse. Gay was very interesting, knowledgeable, witty and worked well with Elwood. Observed and learned a lot of interesting things about Charleston. Purchased our tickets from Austin who was in the parking lot. We were early so Austin suggested Clerk's coffee shop. Great coffee and cookies. Staff we met were very friendly and made us feel at ease. Gay and Austin are great assets to the company and should be recognized.

Our tour guide was very informative and engaging! It was great to learn about Charleston and it’s great significance in US history. The staff was very kind and gave us water to stay hydrated.
