Hoonah Whale Tours is a family owned whale watching company that operates out of Hoonah, AK. When taking this tour you will be on a private 6 passenger boat tour that goes out into Icy Strait. During the tour will you get the chance to see all sorts of Southeast Alaska wildlife, including bald eagles, sea lions, sea otters, sometimes brown bear and orcas and of course humpback whales! Our tours last between 3 and 3.5 hours and we guarantee you'll see whales or you money back. The boat is a 6 passenger catamaran, with a walk around deck, heated cabin, and a bathroom on board. We also provide snacks and beverages.

This was the most amazing experience from when we were picked up until the very end. First time to Alaska and top of the list was to see whales. Totally accomplished. We saw multiple pods, breaching, playing. With a small group, this was an intimate experience ti encounter Alaska’s great gifts. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to truly experience these amazing creatures. Thank you, Mariah and Jordan!

We booked a whale tour with Hoonah Whale tours instead of one with the cruise ship. We were looking for a less crowded experience. We booked the 9am-12pm tour and there was one other couple joining my wife and I. Mariah(wife of the Captain) picked us up at Icy Straight Point where the cruise ships dock. She dropped us off at the pier in Hoonah and we met Captain Joardan Salvard (Her husband and Owner/Operator). He grew up fishing Icy Straight with his dad, so he knows the area very well. The boat was a catamaran with powerful twin outboard motors. Mariah had provided us with Hot Chocolate and Hot Coffee and some snacks for the trip. We enjoy a sunny day with fairly calm seas. We located the Humpback Whales across the Straight and pretty much followed them for several hours. It is a truly beautiful and emotional moment when you see these creatures surface and blow. We witnessed several of their bubble feeding times also. The Captain was able to get us as close as he dared for good photo or video opportunities. You must be quick with your camera and always on the ready, because you never know when or where they will surface. We got back to the pier at noon and Mariah was there to take us back to the Cruise terminal. This is an incredible experience and not to be missed if you land at Icy Straight Point. I highly recommend Hoonah Whale Tours for a whale watching excursion!

Our 3 hour Hoonah Whale Tour was great fun! Jordan is a second generation ocean fisherman so we were in knowledgeable and safe hands. We learned a lot about living in Alaska (he and his family built their own home in Hoonah) as well as seeing the wildlife we came to see. The size of the catamaraan is a great advantage. We even had a whale breech directly in front of us! There were four of us on the tour so we could sit next to Jordan as well as walk around the outside deck, helping to spot the whales. We followed a cow and her calf in Icy Strait for quite a while. Mariah provided us with hot beverages as well as muffins for our early morning watch and was there to pick us up and get us in to Hoonah from the dock. I would definitely recommend Hoonah Whale Tours if your ship is docking at Icy Strait Point!
