If you only have a limited time in Alaska, a train ride from Anchorage to Seward followed by this tour, which can be done on the same day, is the best way to see a lot of what you've imagined Alaska to be! I took the 8 am departure with a friend, four years ago, and it was amazing. This summer, as a family, we took the train from Anchorage and the Kenai Fjord Tour Shuttle was at the depot, at 11:10 to take us directly to the 11:30 tour. If the train is running late, they will not depart until you have a chance to get to the office to check in. In fact, the boat even turned back to pick up four people they didn't realize hadn't made it on yet since the shuttles were so full. We had only just left the marina, but still. The seating at the tables is a bit tight so we dressed to spend most of our time outside and it was great. You do get lunch and there are a few items for purchase, but you might want to bring some snacks. It's a pretty long ride and lunch isn't great. The captain does a great job maneuvering the boat to take advantage of any wildlife sightings. We were lucky to see Orca and Humpback too numerous to count, along with many other kinds of wildlife. That was actually my third time to Alaska and, if I returned to Seward, I would do this tour, again. The overall scenery, the whales, other wildlife, glaciers, fishing boats.......really fantastic! I still can't decide if I prefer the early or late morning tour. I hope if you read this, it inspires you to splurge...you won't be disappointed.

This 6 hour tour is a little long but its necessary in order to see everything they promise. The seas were a little rough outside the protected inlets and I guesstimate that nearly 1/3 of the boat was sick.The staff walks around with vomit bags as the boat is leaving the inlet telling people its best to be ready just in case so obviously this is common. I don't usually take anything but when the captain told everyone they should consider it as we left port I decided to take his advice, and I'm glad I did. My mom also took the advice but still got sick. On the plus side we did see orca's, puffins, humpback whales, sea lions, sea otters, and a beautiful glacier. There was a family with 3 kids under 7. I do not recommend this for young kids. It's too long to be on a boat and if you aren't feeling well it would be very tough on your family. I have 6 year old twins and I was glad they weren't there - too long of a trip and too rough.

This Kenai Fjords tour was great. Captain Steve Martin was the best. Loved watching whales, seeing all the birds in this area, seeing the sea lions and just learning about the area. We got to see a glacier calve. It was chilly, but worth every cent of our tour.
