Misty Fjords National Monument

Alaska's Inside Passage or Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument. Completely road-less and consisting of 2.3 million acres, an area larger than Yellowstone, makes a seaplane tour the only way to comfortably experience the many different levels within the deep, narrow fjords. More dramatic than the Grand Canyon, the fjords are steep walled inlets of the sea. Created by glacial gouging long ago, snow capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands of feet. Nestled within the steep walled canyons, lie pristine bowl-shaped alpine lakes suspended at many different elevations above sea level. Fed by more than 150 inches of misty rain annually, the lush rain forest, made of giant stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar, cling to the rugged rising terrain. Wildlife abounds in the area, with mountain goats and harbor seals being the most frequently sighted animals. Our most popular tour lasts 2 hours and takes you across Revilliagegedo Island over to the Alaskan mainland where the fjords are located, and into the heart of the monument. Headsets with voice communication are provided to passengers so you can chat in flight and ask questions as we fly. For the highlight of the tour, we will land on an alpine lake or on a calm bay at sea level and let passengers get off of the floatplane for a quiet excursion. Relax, stretch your legs and take some photos as you drink in the silence of the vast wilderness. Flying within the Misty Fjords is truly an emotional experience you’ll never forget!!

I can say without hesitation that Michelle and her staff lived up to the hype. Everything from booking via phone with Shona to the pick up and ride to Island Wings office was flawless. Michelle conducted our Misty Fjords flightseeing tour. She was professional and friendly, immediately putting us at ease and leaving no doubt about her expertise as a pilot and guide. It was a beautiful sunny day and I'm sure that made the tour even better. The flight was smooth. In fact we did not even know we landed on the water until we saw the spray coming up from the side of the plane. I am prone to motion sickness and I was a little concerned about how I would handle the flight. It turned out there was nothing to be concerned about. Between the excitement of the experience, the smooth ride and Michelle's demeanor I was not the least bit dizzy or queasy. The scenery, the other worldly feeling of being on a quiet remote island and the entire experience is something we will never forget. This was definitely one of the highlights of our Alaska trip.

I am a lucky gal to have such a great team of people working with me, Shona, Adam, Kelly and Jensen... it takes a village to make it all work! I'm happy to hear you ended up having a great weather day to fly with us. Sometimes the sunny days can be a bumpy ride due to the rising warm air (thermals) that develop, especially in the afternoon. Rainy/Cloudy days are normally the smoothest rides of all as the air is cool and stable. It is an other worldly experience to be surrounded by such dramatic wilderness! Excellent site seeing flight over Misty Fjords.our pilot was superb. She landed on lake Nooya for photo ops which was perfect. We even got a dvd at the end of our flight to remember our experience. Highly recommend. Worth every penny !
