Misty Fjords National Monument

Alaska's Inside Passage or Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument. Completely road-less and consisting of 2.3 million acres, an area larger than Yellowstone, makes a seaplane tour the only way to comfortably experience the many different levels within the deep, narrow fjords. More dramatic than the Grand Canyon, the fjords are steep walled inlets of the sea. Created by glacial gouging long ago, snow capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands of feet. Nestled within the steep walled canyons, lie pristine bowl-shaped alpine lakes suspended at many different elevations above sea level. Fed by more than 150 inches of misty rain annually, the lush rain forest, made of giant stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar, cling to the rugged rising terrain. Wildlife abounds in the area, with mountain goats and harbor seals being the most frequently sighted animals. Our most popular tour lasts 2 hours and takes you across Revilliagegedo Island over to the Alaskan mainland where the fjords are located, and into the heart of the monument. Headsets with voice communication are provided to passengers so you can chat in flight and ask questions as we fly. For the highlight of the tour, we will land on an alpine lake or on a calm bay at sea level and let passengers get off of the floatplane for a quiet excursion. Relax, stretch your legs and take some photos as you drink in the silence of the vast wilderness. Flying within the Misty Fjords is truly an emotional experience you’ll never forget!!

A group of 10 of us booked 2 seaplanes for the Misty Fjords Seaplane Tour with Island Wings Air Service. We got of the Golden Princess cruise ship in Ketchican and walked to the meeting place by the giant rain gauge. The van arrived, rounded everyone up, and took us to their off. We sent them a 50% deposit so we had to pay the remainder. After a bathroom break, everyone was assigned a plane and then seats depending on their weight. I was lucky enough to sit in the copilots seat next to Michelle (the owner). She gave a very good narration over the headsets we all wore. You were able to talk to her and the other passengers on the plane. The flight was just amazing. We landed in a mountain lake and got out to take photos. There was a group of seals playing on the shoreline. Ducks swam around the pier. We saw a bald eagle in a nearby tree. The flights and landings were very smooth. Just unbelievable! After our flight, the driver dropped of us at Creek Street so we could enjoy Ketchican.

Dear Ken G, Thank you for taking the time to write such a nice review! I am happy to hear that you and your group enjoyed your flight with us and than some wildlife cooperated during your landing in Misty Fjords. Not everyone is that lucky! Almost everyone we take on this tour inquires about seeing wildlife. From the air it can be difficult to see animals, especially when you are a few thousand of feet above the surface looking down into densely vegetated forest. Keen eyes and a relative perspective are essential, a bear for example will look like a small, fuzzy black or brown dot, like a bug. However sometimes the wildlife just cooperates nicely as in your case! I hope the rest of your travels through Alaska were equally enjoyable! Many happy trails, Michelle

We took this sea plane adventure while on a cruise on the inside passage. It’s difficult to describe the amazing views and rugged beauty of Alaska, but this allows you to see places that many will not ever get to experience. Our pilot was very knowledgeable about the area and pointed out many areas of interest. We got to land on one of the fjords and I was truly humbling setting foot where few other humans will ever. I highly recommend this as a once in a lifetime experience.

The Misty Fjords National Monument is not like any other place, something you just have to see for yourself! I have flown with private, LE and military in several types of aircraft, and i have to say that Michelle is a good stick! he is a very good pilot that sees to the needs of every passenger (which is why we were a little in the flight-some passengers were late), but she took the time to make it an enjoyable experience for everyone. I would recommend taking a flight with her!

I think the three best qualities of a good pilot are flexibility, humility, (Alaska will humble you if you are not already humble :), and of course experience. When people marvel at a soft landing I always chalk it up to practice, practice and more practice.
