Our guide Josh was very personable and seemed to know a good amount of Savannah history. I searched quite a bit before booking this tour and it seemed to be one of the two that came up on all searches. I chose it because it had more reviews and they were good. This is not the kind of tour for anyone who is seriously interested in learning about how the cultural influences of Savannah are reflected in the food. The first place came the closest as we were served shrimp snd grits. And they were tasty. It was also the only place we weren’t crammed into a hot crowded space. There were 12 of us in the group. The next stop was at the prohibition museum. This was the worst not only for the “food” served but because there was literally NO correlation to food served and the place. We were given smaller than 1/4 of a pimento cheese sandwich between two pieces of white bread, literally TWO boiled peanuts and what I was told were pickled vegetables. Plus a dental wash cup worth of punch, an alcoholic drink served at the bar. No one discussed the food or the time period although we were free to roam around the museum and see the artifacts. It was pretty crowded. The next place was a English style bakery where we were crammed into what we were told was called a snug in England. There was no air conditioning. We were given either 1/2 of a sausage roll or it might have been 1/4. We never saw any other part of the establishment other than to walk right by the bakery case because the place is TINY. The sausage roll was tasty but would have been a better choice in the fall or winter and not in the sweltering heat. Onto the next place—-which I believe was another pub, but Scottish. Not sure what this has to do with Savannah but it was explained to us either. The place was not at all crowded but the air conditioning was either not working or turned off and it smelled awful. It smelled like mildew and stale air. Here, we were served shepherds pie. Yet another choice that would have made sense in cooler weather. It was a tiny amount but tasted fine. The fifth place was a Cuban bar/deli that was supposed to represent Spain’s influence in Savannah. Yes, the Spanish did colonize Cuba and Spanish is spoken in Cuba but it would have been more authentic had we been taken to a Spanish restaurant. At this stop we were served a chicken empanada. The space was also incredibly cramped but the empanada was good and the mojito (available for purchase) was tasty. Final stop was a honey store. It was fine, nothing I would ever miss. The bottom line is I think you get $10-15 (to be generous) worth of food and an affable tour guide but you go to places that are nothing special, are encouraged to buy alcohol at an extra cost (no doubt the tour operator scores extra points with the establishment by bringing in some additional revenue) and at times are cramped and uncomfortable. My daughter and I went to mrs Wilkes dining room for lunch today and i felt a hundred times more immersed in Savannah’s culinary history and culture in that one visit than we did at the tour. If there isn’t a more serious foodie tour run by people who are passionate about the culinary history of this part of the country, there should be. There would definitely be a market for it and I’d be the first to go.

Our guide was pretty good with some interesting facts about Savannah but mostly seemed to want to help sell each establishment’s liquor. This was strictly listed as a culinary tour so those under 21 and those non drinkers were not happy. Also the amounts, quality, and presentation of the foods was terrible. Two of the six “places” weren’t even restaurants- to get a quarter of a pimento sandwich , 2 peanuts and 3 tiny pickled vegetables at a museum does NOT constitute a food stop! Very very unhappy. Been to food tours and even wine tours that were done better.

The food was delicious. Our guide, Rachel, was very knowledgeable about Savannah and was friendly. The only downside was the seating accommodations at some of our stops weren't always comfortable. We also had 2 samples that were similar.
