Simple excursion to get a taste of the area. I should've worn regular tennis shoes like the others in the small group did. Wished we had more time at Red Rock to explore, we were only there 45 minutes, so I didn't walk down past the amphitheater - thought I wouldn't be able to walk all the way back up and wanted to save my energy. I'm 50 and have been walking our stadium seats at home in Michigan to get in shape for this, but the altitude was affecting me. Others in my group did walk down from the upper parking lot down to the trading post and back up. I went into the visitors center and used the bathroom, filled my water bottle, and looked through part of the museum. Our tour guide Cowboy Frank challenged us to ask a question from the museum later and he got it right! He was very knowledgeable about the area and gave us a great tour narrative in general. Such a great guy. Our next stop was Echo Lake but we stopped to see some bison on the way, which was a short walk from parking area on a paved trail. Echo Lake was gorgeous! We walked the trail around the lake, which seemed light just a slight incline, but it was kicking my butt because of the altitude, about 11,000 feet I think. Luckily this was a short hike, beautiful forest! He carefully and cautiously drove us through the mountains down to the quaint town of Evergreen where we stopped for a 45 minute break to grab a drink, sandwich, and few minutes through a few gift shops on our own. I highly recommend the The Muddy Buck for a food stop as that side of the road seemed like the buildings were original old west rugged charm. It was so nice to have an excursion that touched on the highlights yet I didn't have to do any of the treacherous driving out navigating! Thanks!
