The scenery begins to change as we increase in elevation and views of the cactus fade into pine trees. As we continue further into Northern Arizona, we will travel the outskirts of the Route 66 town of Flagstaff and from the highway, see the San Francisco Peaks among the seemingly endless Ponderosa Pine Forest, the largest contiguous forest of ponderosa pines in the world.

Williams will be our first stop along the tour for a chance to experience Route 66, the iconic American highway steeped in rich tradition. While in Williams, guests will have the opportunity to “get their kicks on Route 66” with walks along the original route, explore the local shops and capture souvenir photos highlighting a bygone era in classic American history. Also known as the Will Rodgers Highway, Route 66 is the most recognizable road in the United States and stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago to California upon completion.

First trip to Arizona and the Grand Canyon with my sisters- The weather was amazing (can be very cold in the higher elevation- still snow in March). The van was comfortable and the scenery was breathtaking! We were very fortunate to see lots of elk! We opted for the box lunch and they are large portions! We loved Williams, and Rt.66- have to be quick to see the little town and get a piece of pie to take with you, but the Grand Canyon was well worth shaving off the time in Williams. Sam was our tour guide. He was insanely knowledgable about the Grand Canyon, and the Colorado Basin in general. He is passionate and sensitive about geology and the deeper topics of visiting one of the 7 Wonders of the World. We had a great mix in our group- from multiple countries, and a variety of ages. The tour has something for everyone! Sam explained the information so that everyone could understand it. It is a long day- can be exhausting, but well worth it to travel from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon and back in one day. You can't describe the moment when you open your eyes for the first time and take it all in- Sam provided experiences for our group that brought us all together- it was very special. He made it appeal to all 5 senses- I would definitely tour with him again!

Thank you for taking the time to detail your day with DETOURS! The weather around this time of year is absolute perfect for adventuring and sightseeing at Arizona's National Landmarks and Parks. While it can be quite cold, being prepared with enough warm clothes (that our reservation staff suggests prior to your tour) you can enjoy the day comfortably! Guest satisfaction and safety is our top priority - so we're glad to hear that even with the weather being cold, you still had a comfortable and breathtaking experience! We always recommend the boxed lunch. It can be extremely difficult to purchase lunch on the way, considering time restraints from ordering (long lines and preparation time) and the time we can allow to stay on schedule usually conflict more than we would like. That is actually why we instated the boxed lunch so that when we arrive into Williams your lunch will be ready and waiting for you! Makes for an far more relaxing day for everybody! Our tour guides all share an extreme passion for the Southwest and Arizona - so as you can imagine, the Grand Canyon is one of our favorite places to go to! Lucky for us, we get to go there just about every single day. With the intense knowledge, know-how, and a little bit of charisma and humor, our guides deliver an outstanding day filled with rich history, culture, and everything in-between while we are out there on the road and in the National Park! Sam does a particularly great job with people who have never visited the park before to make their first viewing that much more magical. In regards to your group, you never know who you're going to meet out on tour with us. We usually embark as friends & strangers and come back as family. Long days indeed, but as you say - well worth it! We couldn't agree more. Thank you so much again for sharing your experience with DETOURS, with Sam, and with your group out there at the Grand Canyon National Park! We do hope to see you again soon. We've got plenty more of the Southwest to share with you. :)

Nate our driver & guide was extremely knowledgable about the locations, geology, related folklore, and history. That certainly made the (relatively) long drive pass by quickly. We had a good amount of time (˜3 hrs.) at the GC, incl. a ˜2km trail along the south rim which was quite easy. The views were truly magnificent. He also made a sufficient number of stops. It would be worth 5 stars if lunch was included.
